How does advancing Sámi democratic engagement generate more just decision making and greater legitimacy between national governments and Sámi society?
SápmiDem is a community-driven, interdisciplinary research project with Sámi and Nordic scholars that examines the democratic participation of the Sámi people in the energy transition in the Nordic countries and the legitimacy of the transition from the Sámi perspective.
The key questions SápmiDem explores include: what are the systemic and structural changes needed at local, regional, and national levels for a just and legitimate energy transition in Sápmi? What are the strategies and best practices to facilitate Sámi democratic participation, justice, and legitimacy in the energy transition in the short and long term?
The project is funded by Nordforsk through its Green Transition program. SápmiDem runs from October 2024 to September 2028.
